Eco labels on food packaging are confusing, and customers are increasingly skeptical of vague green claims. Here is what the common terms actually mean.
Compostable
Compostable paper breaks down into natural materials in a composting environment. Commercial composting is faster and hotter than a home compost pile, so check which one a product is certified for.
Recyclable
Recyclable means the material can be processed into new paper. Food-soiled paper is often not accepted, so recyclable wraps are best for dry items.
Biodegradable
Almost everything biodegrades eventually, which is why this term on its own says very little. Prefer specific, certified claims.
Tip: tell customers exactly what to do with your packaging, for example “compost me” printed on the wrap, rather than using a general green label.
